Abstract
In 2019 the NLN issued a vision statement focused on integrating Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) into nursing education curricula. The WHO states that SDoH, defined as the conditions in which people live and work, can lead to health inequalities. SDoH includes lack of income, inappropriate housing, unsafe workplaces, and decreased access to health systems.
A nursing informatics textbook was revised to include SDoH-focused case studies. Case study analysis is a facilitated, active, student-centered approach that supports the development of clinical judgment. A traditional nursing case study involves a clinical scenario requiring higher-level thinking to translate knowledge into practice using questions.
In the informatics textbook, faculty are provided novel case studies that are based on recent publications. Students are asked to consider the role of the informatics nurse in improving health outcomes for the 25% of Americans without broadband internet access. Access to broadband internet is now considered an SDoH since it leads to poor health outcomes and low health literacy.
Students explore the topic of Electronic Health Records in an article about tennis star Serena Williams, which illustrates how integrating SDoH into EHRs may reduce maternal mortality for women of color. Students engage with a study of the Navajo Nation, which experienced the highest number of COVID-19 cases per capita in the U.S., and how telehealth can promote optimal health for those living in remote locations. I will lead attendees through the creation of a case study on an SDoH of interest to the group.
The presentation will demonstrate that using case studies can facilitate understanding of SDoH when applied to real life situations. Integrating SDoH into curricula can foster clinical judgment, assist nurses with incorporating SDoH knowledge into practice, and give nurses a confident voice in advocating for high-risk populations.
