Abstract
Distance is a crucial factor that influences student enrollment decisions. Studies have shown that proximity to home and the location of a university play a significant role in a student's choice of institution. Factors such as cost savings, exposure to the college atmosphere, and the influence of family and community can all contribute to the importance of distance in enrollment decisions. Additionally, geographic location plays a role in college athletic recruitment, as universities with strong pull power can attract athletes from diverse backgrounds, enhancing their athletic programs and campus communities. This study seeks to understand, to what extent do specific demographic factors interact with the geographical distance from a student's home to a small Christian Liberal Arts University in South Carolina, and how do these factors collectively shape the decision-making process regarding enrollment at this institution. The Marketing Department at the university provided data from initial freshman students obtained during the students’ orientation during the Fall semester 2024. The participants for this study were contacted via email to be a part of an online survey. This was administered over two weeks in the Spring Semester 2024. The results of the survey were analyzed to determine if geographic distance from the students’ home to the university had an effect on the student’s decision to attend that university. The researchers intend to provide recommendations to the university Marketing Department as to the results. One limitation of this study is that only students enrolled at the university were contacted to participate, and therefore it is not known if geographic distant had an effect on those students that did not decide to attend.
