Abstract

With the gradual and steady increase in demand for the transmission of more data and faster relay of information, the invention and development of fiber optic technology have enabled knowledge, innovation, and new business ideas that rekindle opportunities in the economy. As a result, this has compelled the spread and adoption of cabling telecommunications applications. The fiber optical system has greatly developed globally since the year 2001. This research evaluates the socio-economic impacts of Fiber-Optic Telecommunication (FOT) development especially in the U.S.A. Based on a study conducted in Texas and using a descriptive survey design (N=115), the research focused on the evaluation of the development of FOT, examined the essential products and services offered by FOT, evaluated the social impacts of FOT as well as the impact of FOT on the U.S. economy. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, frequency tables, graphical methods, and ANOVA tests. The study identified five significant factors that influenced the growth of FOT: affordable installation and connectivity costs (F= 4.142 and p=0.010), affordable communication costs (F= 5.875 and p=0.004), affordable regular maintenance costs (F=4.355 and p=0.015), consumer awareness (F=3.760 and p=0.026), and flexible infrastructural adjustments (F=5.021 and p=0.008). Meanwhile, the study identified four out of the five services and products offered by fiber-optic telecommunication to be statistically significant: digital communication (F=19.054 and p=0.000), information through social media (F=4.689 and p=0.011), internet applications (F= 3.760 and p=0.026) as well as TV and radio signals (F= 8.634 and p=0.000). Based on the results, the majority of the respondents agreed that through the growth and development of fiber-optic telecommunication in Texas, ICT capabilities were enabled. Also, there was an improvement in communication, enhancement of information relay, development in the education sector especially in learning institutions, and improvement in the management of business enterprises. It was also observed that the majority of the respondents strongly agreed that the growth and development of FOT led to economic growth, business transformations, improved research, and innovation in business opportunities, increased employment opportunities, enhanced industrial development to its peak, and improvement in the banking sector particularly in digital banking and data processing.
