Styles of Parenting Among Hispanics in the United States

Abstract

Parenting styles provide the emotional climate for interaction between parents and children. This study explores on the experiences of parents of Hispanic descent as they raise their children in the United States. The interview was conducted on Hispanic parents of school-aged children and on those with adult children, many of whom are employed and in the work force. They were asked several questions directed at identifying their parenting styles. Results showed many Hispanic parents employing the authoritarian style versus authoritative. Findings suggested that Hispanic parents tend to experience several problems relating to control versus freedom as they raise their children amid a predominantly north American culture. This explained why Hispanic parenting style tend to be very strict towards their school-aged children. They impose strict rules. They only say things once and they expect their children to listen for the first time without talking back or throwing some kind of tantrum. As an effect, many children grow to be rebellious or less successful. This research serves as a foundation to further research.
