Picture Yourself Here: Using Library Exhibits to Attract and Interact with the University Community

Abstract

Post-renovation and post-pandemic, the USC Upstate Library wanted to improve in-person interactions with students, staff, and faculty and encourage use of our remodeled space. In addition, with ongoing concerns over student retention, we wanted our library to contribute to campus culture, create a sense of belonging, and better reflect our diverse student body.

One approach to addressing these aims has been the use of low-cost and no-cost poster exhibits to engage with the campus community. In this presentation, the reasons for employing this approach will be explored in detail, as will the challenges in creating a regular program of relevant exhibits. Ideas on finding exhibits, safely displaying materials, and building relationships with campus partners will be shared. Participants will be encouraged to provide feedback on the library’s approach and to suggest future exhibits and displays.
