Digital Humanities Panel: Learning About Nature in Your Own Backyard

Abstract

Social media has given academics a new way to interact with and educate the public. I use my Facebook page, Southern Piedmont Natural History, to teach people across the southeast about common organisms they might find at that time of year in their home, yard, or at a local park.

The topics I write about represent the broad spectrum of natural history, from plants, animals, fungi, lichens, and slime molds, to bones, rocks, sounds, and the writings of early naturalists. Each of my posts covers the identification and ecology of the organism in a non-technical manner that is approachable by the general public.

To the best of my knowledge, Southern Piedmont Natural History is the most socially interactive nature-focused Facebook page in the United States. The page has over 31,000 followers and is viewed by over 6 million people per year.
