Abstract

Vaccination is a key public health tool that allows for herd immunity and prevents disease outbreaks. COVID-19 vaccines were released in 2021 in an effort to decrease infections and deaths from the disease. Despite recommendations by the majority of healthcare and public health experts, vaccine hesitancy created roadblocks for reaching herd immunity.

South Carolina has had lower vaccination rates compared to the national average. Research shows gender, race, age, and other factors are determinants of vaccination acceptance.

In this project, we collected video stories from individuals providing their personal reasons for getting vaccinated. This work put faces and stories behind vaccination motivation. The videos were produced in both Spanish and English. Individuals who were African American, Hispanic, or female were especially recruited for the videos due to the lower vaccination rates in these populations. This digital story adds a more personal touch to the dissemination of vaccine information.
