Abstract
The brochure for an exhibition of rare books, maps, and visual materials chiefly from the library of South Carolina College, mounted in the mezzanine exhibition gallery, Thomas Cooper Library, University of South Carolina, spring 1994. Most of the books have been in the College library since the 1830s and 1840s. This brochure lists the items exhibited but does not include the descriptive exhibit text. The oldest item was an engraving of Mexico city from Ramusio's Voyages, printed in 1565. Other early works included illustrations of Aztec society from De Bry's Greater Voyages and maps by De Laet and Montanus. Some of the most impressive volumes are from the early 19th century, such as Alexander von Humboldt's Vues des Cordellerses (1810) and the Earl of Kingsborough's 7-volume Antiquities of Mexico (1830), with colored ifacsimiles of preColumbian manuscripts. Later exhibition cases included material from the Republic of Texas, the Mexican wars and annexations, and with some additional material up to 1916.
