Abstract

This library exhibition from the William D. Haggard III Collection was curated by Patrick Scott, in the mezzanine exhibition gallery, Thomas Cooper Library, from May-August 2005. It tells the story of tennis over the past seven centuries beginning with a first edition of the first book about tennis from 1555, through important works from late 18th c France, through to the invention of lawn tennis, the democratization of tennis, the rise of competitive tournaments and the star system, and the democratization of the sport. The brochure digitized here lists the items displayed but does not include the exhibition text or annotations. .
