The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is a measure reflecting the average number of citations to articles published in journals, books, patent documents, thesis, project reports, newspapers, conference/ seminar proceedings, documents published on the Internet, notes, and any other approved documents. It measures the relative importance of a journal within its field, with journals of higher journal impact factors deemed to be more important than those with lower ones.

How the Impact Factor was Calculated:

The calculation is based on a two-year period and involves dividing the number of times articles were cited by the number of articles that are citable.

Sample Calculation of 2020 IF of a journal:

  1. A = the number of times articles published in 2018 and 2019 were cited by indexed journals during 2018.
  2. B = the total number of “citable items” published in 2018 and 2019.
  3. A/B = 2020 impact factor
