Clarence Tolbert Goolsby, Jr. was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1935. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from The Citadel in 1959 and his LL.B. from the University of South Carolina in 1962. Later in life, he graduated from the University of Virginia with his LL.M. in 1992. He served as Assistant Attorney General of South Carolina from 1962 to 1972. He served as Deputy Attorney General of South Carolina from 1973 to1983 and Chief Deputy Attorney General of South Carolina in 1983. He was elected to the South Carolina Court of Appeals at its inception in September 1983. Judge Goolsby served continuously as an Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals until his retirement in 2007. He then served as a specially-appointed judge after his retirement. He also served as an Acting Associate Justice with the South Carolina Supreme Court on several occasions.
This collection consists of the student notebooks Judge Goolsby kept while a law student at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1960 and 1961. These course notes were taken in courses taught by Professors Coleman Karesh, David Harper Means, and Charles Randall.
