Regional Data in Historic Archeology: Examples from Environmental Impact Surveys
John H. House
The emphasis on regional vs. single site data in prehistoric archeology is related to the assumption that culture is an adaptive behavioral system articulated with the natural and social environments. The testing of hypotheses and models about the nature of past societies in the historic period likewise requires regional data, not all of which may be available in the historical record. Archeological survey data--including those generated by Environmental Impact studies and other specific contract research--may be relevant to measuring cultural variables of historic period societies on a regional basis. Location, variability, and density of sites are some aspects of the historic archeological record which are especially amenable to measurement using survey data. Some examples of these aspects, derived from recent contract work in Arkansas and Missouri are discussed.

An Archeological Survey of the Proposed Access Road, Terminal, and Parking Areas on Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
David G. Anderson
At the request of the Horry County Airport Commission, the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology, University of South Carolina, conducted an archeological survey on the grounds of a proposed terminal building, access road, and auto parking area on land presently within the confines of the United States Air Force's Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Base. The survey was conducted on April 9, 1975, and indicated that there were no significant historic or prehistoric archeological sites in or near the areas to be affected by construction. No additional investigations of the impacted area, and no secondary mitigation recommendations or proposals are considered necessary.

Archeological Survey of the South Tyger Watershed
Michael O. Hartley
At the request of the Soil Conservation Service an archeological survey was conducted by the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology, University of South Carolina on three proposed reservoir projects in the South Tyger River Watershed, Greenville County, South Carolina. The survey took place in February 1975 and revealed eight previously unrecorded sites in the watershed area. None of these sites are of a significance to warrant further extensive investigation, and there is little possibility that the reservoir projects will destroy any significant archeological sites.

Initiated in 1969, the Research Manuscript Series consists of technical monographs summarizing archaeological projects in South Carolina conducted by SCIAA personnel and collaborators. Many of these reports describe the results of excavations, but artifact analyses and ethnohistorical research are represented as well.
