Abstract
My senior thesis focuses on the most impactful experiences I have had here at the University of South Carolina: leadership. Leadership experience is a very important part in the development of a student, especially during their college years. This thesis is aimed at analyzing the impact, if any, between leadership activities at the University of South Carolina and career outcome. This thesis contains a literature review and a survey that was distributed to University of South Carolina students between November 2023 and February 2024. The survey was specifically targeted at current seniors, their extracurricular experience and their post graduate plans. In total, there were 101 respondents, and 73 of them were seniors. Results indicate that students who have held an on campus leadership role were 54.7% more likely to have accepted a job offer. Contrarily, holding an on campus leadership position seems to have had no effect on acceptance into graduate school. Additionally, participating in leadership roles did not have a significant impact on the participants self-assessment of skills typically associated with leadership. The study points toward the need for further study with a larger population size and a more mandatory survey to prevent bias.
