Abstract

For my senior thesis, I knew that I wanted to explore a topic dealing with the Spanish language. I have been taking Spanish classes for 8 years, and have always loved the language. I completed my minor in Spanish after my sophomore year and was looking for a way to continue improving my knowledge of the language, as well as to learn more about the cultures that speak it. The senior thesis project for the University of South Carolina Honors College provided me with the perfect opportunity to accomplish these goals.

In the summer of 2012, I studied abroad in Bilbao, Spain located in what is known as the Basque country, or “el País Vasco” in Spanish. I lived with a family in the city for a month, and took classes in Spanish language and culture at the Universidad de Deusto. While in Spain, I had the opportunity to visit several other cities as well. While I learned a great deal about the region, I knew that there was so much more that I wanted to know.

In this project, I decided to explore several different aspects of the Basque country including its history, government and culture. I believe that through this project I have realized my goal of learning more about the Basque country, while improving my knowledge of the Spanish language. I plan on continuing to learn more about Spanish and the cultures that speak it as I move on after college.
