Abstract

Discusses the possible publication date for a previously-unrecorded early broadside of Burns's Jacobite song "The Chevalier's Lament" ("The small birds rejoice") (Kinsley I: 411-412; K 220), recently auctioned in Macon, Georgia, exploring the early manuscript and printed texts for Burns's song, and identifying the second item on the broadside, a response to the United Irishmen's defeat in 1798, as by the radical Liverpool poet Edward Rushton; sets this in the context of other early Burns broadsides, of Liverpool printing in the 1790s and early 1800s, and of recent work on the cultural significance of the broadside format in the Burns period. Includes illustrations.
