Abstract

Discusses the contrast between the standard reading in Burns's song "Yestreen I had a pint of wine" describing the "gowden locks of Anna" and the reading in early printed texts, where the locks are "raven." Canvasses possible explanations for the variant, notes two early MS not used by Kinsley for the Oxford edition, and examines the role of James Currie in ensuring the song was included in the official Burns canon.
