Reviews the origin and reconstructs the printing time-table for the two settings of Robert Burns's second collection, Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect (Edinburgh, 1787), arguing that some distinctive variant readings in the second ('Stinking') setting may have been made by Burns himself.
