Abstract
Argues that the negative reaction to E.D. Hirsch's controversial concept of cultural literacy, originally published in article form, stems from ignoring the continuities between his early work as a literary critic and theorist with his later work on writing and composition. Predates Hirsch's book Cultural Literacy (1988). Originally presented at the Winthrop College Rhetoric Symposium, 1986.
