Abstract

The authorship of this short book, printed by Burns's first publisher John Wilson, had previously been unknown, because the only cataloged copy, at Glasgow University Library, lacked its title-page: by examining a second incomplete copy, at the Burns Monument Centre, Kilmarnock, this note attributes authorship to the Rev. Dr. William M'Gill of Ayr, and argues that it was produced by M'Gill's friends to build public support for him against accusations of heresy put forward by the Auld Licht clergy.
