The Mysterious 'WR' Once More: a Mid-Victorian Reminiscence

Abstract

Discusses the identity of "WR" who in 1785-86 annotated Robert Burns's manuscript First Commonplace Book with suggestions about which poems should be included in a future printed collection, and suggests that, despite its internal contradictions, a rather muddled anecdote first printed in 1869 in Part XXIII of Hately Waddell's Life and Works of Robert Burns supports the case that WR might be William Reid, the Glasgow printer.
