Abstract
This exhibition was created by request for Prof. Lawrence Rhu's honors seminar SCCC351D: the Bible and English Literature, and originally mounted in the Graniteville Room, Thomas Cooper Library, February-March, 2001. It illustrates earlier English bibles (Latin and English), successive and competing 16th and early 17th English bibles (including Geneva, Rheims, and an Authorized or King James version from 1611), some early American bibles (including a Geneva bible allegedly brought over on the Mayflower, an Eliot Indian bible, and the first English-language bible printed in the US, in Philadelphia in 1782), and some examples of modern fine printing (including a Doves bible and a Golden Cockerel Four Gospels). A fuller exhibition was mounted in 2011.
