An extended review of Christopher Whatley's Immortal Memory: Burns and the Scottish People (Edinburgh: John Donald, 2016), recounting the ways Burns was memorialized and celebrated in Victorian Scotland, the process through which different communities proposed and erected Burns statues or other monuments, and the differing social and political movements of which the statues are the material embodiment.
