This collection consists of notes and notebooks that Harold Alwyn Mouzon kept while reading law with Walter B. Wilbur at the firm of Miller, Huger, Wilbur and Miller in the late 1910s in Charleston, South Carolina. Born in Bamberg on October 3, 1893, Mouzon graduated with high honors at the College of Charleston in 1913. After graduation, he taught at the High School of Charleston and studied law with Wilbur beginning at least by 1917. Mouzon earned admission to the South Carolina Bar in 1919. After being admitted to the Bar, Mouzon joined the firm where he had read law, now named Huger, Wilbur, Miller and Mouzon, as a junior partner. In 1938, he became a partner in the firm of Moore and Mouzon, practicing law in Charleston until his death on September 26, 1967.
These notes and notebooks cover much of the material in the course of study prescribed for bar applicants by the Supreme Court of South Carolina in Rule 26, Section 5, printed in volume 94 of the South Carolina Reports (1916), p. 535-538. They provide an interesting glimpse into what the study of law was like for someone reading law at a law firm in the years before applicants were required to obtain a law school degree.
