Final Manuscript Preparation Guidelines for Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

All submissions must be in English and in the form of a an editable MS Word document. Hidden formatting (e.g., hidden footnote call-outs,citation-reference links, etc.) must be completely scrubbed prior to submission. The editors will format all articles to follow WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards for digital content.

Formatting Requirements

  • Use a 12-point font throughout the document.
  • Do not include page numbers, headers, or footers. These will be added by the editors.
  • Submit the manuscript, including tables, figures, appendices, etc., as a single MS Word file with tables and figures located at the end of the file.
  • Single space the text and include line numbering.
  • Use a single column layout.
  • Thoroughly read and edit your manuscript prior to submission.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should appear at the end of the manuscript. Large tables or figures should be put on pages by themselves.

  • Tables must be submitted as editable text, not as images.
  • Table fonts must be at least 10-point.
  • Cite all figures and tables in the manuscript text.
  • Tables and figures must have captions. A caption should consist of a brief title and a description of the image.
  • Figures must include an alternate text description.

    • References

    It is the author's obligation to provide complete references with the necessary information. References should appear at the end of the document.

  • Any references cited within the article should also be present in the reference list and vice versa.
  • References can be in any style or format as long as the style is consistent.
  • Author names, journal or book titles, chapter or article titles, year of publication, volume numbers, article numbers or pagination must be included, where applicable. Use of DOIs is recommended.

    • A basic style suggestion is as follows:

    • Book: Author AB, Author CD. 2013. Title of Book. Publisher, City, ST, Country.
    • Book Article: Author AB, Author CD. 2013. Title of article. In Adams AB, Smith DC, eds, Title of Book, 2nd ed, Vol 1-Toxicology. Publisher, City, ST, Country, pp 1-5.
    • Journal Article: Author AB, Author CD. 2013. Title of article. Title of Journal Vol:Pages.
    • Proceedings: Author AB, Author CD. 2013. Title of article. Proceedings, Name of Conference, City, ST, Country, date (month, days, year), pp 00-00 (if no page numbers are available, cite parenthetically in the text).
    • Dissertation: Author AB. 2013. Title of thesis. PhD thesis. University, City, ST, Country.
