Abstract

Jamaican art song remains underrepresented in mainstream classical training. As a result, singers may lack exposure to its linguistic and cultural nuances. This dissertation addresses this gap by providing a performance guide specific to Peter Ashbourne’s (b. 1950-) Fi Mi Love Have Lion Heart, a set of five art songs. Attention is given to matters of text delivery, rhythmic clarity, stylistic character, and the balance between authenticity and vocal freedom. In doing so, the study honors both the classical vocal tradition and the cultural context from which these works emerge.

This document provides performance practices, interpretation and diction, including an International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) guide to support accurate pronunciation of Jamaican Creole (Patois) specific to Ashbourne’s art songs while affirming that healthy classical technique remains foundational.

The primary aim of this study is to equip classical singers, particularly non- Jamaican performers, with practical tools for preparing and performing these works with confidence, stylistic awareness, and cultural sensitivity.

Although the central focus is on Ashbourne’s art songs, a small compilation of vocal and instrumental works by other Jamaican composers is included. This inclusion broadens awareness of Jamaica’s classical art song contributions. Furthermore, it offers performers and educators additional culturally diverse repertoire to explore. By presenting multiple compositional voices within Jamaica’s classical landscape, the study encourages greater diversity in recital programming and pedagogical practice.

Ultimately, this dissertation serves as a practical and accessible resource for singers, teachers, and collaborative pianists seeking to engage with Jamaican art song in an informed and respectful manner. By providing interpretive guidance and linguistic support, it contributes to the continued expansion of the classical vocal repertoire.
