Abstract
The U.S. is currently faced with a nursing shortage that has global implications. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors encompass multiple variables that directly contribute to the current shortage. These issues have been shown to have a direct impact on overall organizational commitment. Current best practices recommend a multifactorial approach of creating and implementing strategies that directly address these issues as a means of promoting organizational commitment for the recruitment and retention of nurses in health care organizations. Furthermore, strategic recommendations to improve overall work environments for nurses vary throughout the literature. In order to recommend strategies for increasing organizational commitment of hospital staff nurses, the literature was critiqued and synthesized. Based on the literature, recommendations for organizational change were suggested.
