Abstract
This study explores the service environment on the campuses of three large public research institutions: Michigan State University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Through qualitative research, campus environments were examined through culture, curriculum, co-curriculum, and community (Braskamp, Trautvetter, and Ward, 2008). Multiple site case studies provide contrasts and comparisons between each institutional environment. The Corporation for National and Community Service had previously recognized each institution in this study for exceptional service programming. The study revealed common themes that have helped these institutions to receive national attention and build campuses where students, faculty, and administrators actively contribute to a service environment.
