Abstract
Treadmill is a novel about the tension between personal accountability and obedience to context. Set in a Chicago that is both Gangland fantasy and mundane reality, Treadmill chronicles Gretchen Penfield's attempts to lose weight, and the unusual, ramifications of her journey of self-improvement on several local crime families. The novel is darkly comic and centers around a hazy morality which each character tries to bring into focus, with varying degrees of success, ultimately questioning the binary of altruism and self-interest.
