Abstract

Problem statement: Within nursing there are some skills that hold a significant amount of risk. This includes neonatal resuscitation within stand-alone emergency departments. Due to the low frequency of opportunities to practice neonatal resuscitation, nurses must utilize alternative methods to maintain current evidence-based practice. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a protocol incorporating Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preparedness and simulation to increase stand-alone emergency department nurses’ perceived clinical competence to performing neonatal resuscitation. Methods: The development and implementation of a protocol that defines and incorporates NRP roles, provides a maintenance checklist for resuscitation station organization, outlines the use of NRP’s resuscitation algorithms, and employs mandatory simulation practice was implemented in a stand-alone emergency department in Florida. Analysis: Prior to and following a protocol incorporating NRP preparedness and simulation in February of 2024, nurses were provided with pre-and-post surveys including five 7-point Likert scale questions pertaining to their clinical confidence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Additionally, they were asked two qualitative questions to further glean information about their clinical confidence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Implications for Practice: This project provides valuable data for practice by determining the effectiveness of a protocol incorporating Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preparedness and simulation to increase stand-alone emergency department nurses’ perceived clinical confidence to perform neonatal resuscitation. If found to be impactful, the protocol can be recommended as a policy and can be disseminated to other stand-alone emergency departments.
