Abstract

This special issue explores the growing challenge of online digital pollution in the era of generative artificial intelligence (AI). The featured articles highlight the evolution of digital threats from isolated deceptive artifacts to complex, interconnected ecosystems of influence that combine generative AI, social media, and multimodal content manipulation. The contributions underscore the need for interdisciplinary approaches that integrate artificial intelligence and social computing to better understand, detect, and mitigate emerging forms of online deception and polarization.
