Abstract
Fitness professionals consistently leverage the most recent advancements in science and technology to enhance the results of their clients and athletes. Whether it is wearable technology to track movement and heart rate, force plates to track power output, or smart equipment that adjusts resistance based on the user, personal trainers, strength coaches, and physical therapists regularly search for new ways to engage their population and maximize their fitness outcomes. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) brings with it some exciting opportunities to support fitness professionals in their daily tasks, as well as the results of their clients. AI models may be developed that analyze an individual’s fitness data, motives, time constraints, preferences, and injuries, and then design customized workout programming to meet their goals. AI-driven systems may also synthesize information from wearable technology and nutrition-tracking software to further refine a client’s training and recovery recommendations. Development is currently underway on models that use neural networks in conjunction with motion tracking to prescribe proper exercise technique. Generative AI may even be used to design voiced virtual coaches who provide personalized motivation and feedback. While these prospects sound promising for future exercisers, they may also raise concerns for the job outlook of certain fitness professionals. This presentation will explore some of these potential uses for AI in fitness, address concerns about the impact of AI on careers in training and coaching, and offer some ideas for how current professionals may use this technology to support their businesses.
