Abstract

Robert Edmund Jones says in 'The Dramatic Imagination, 'A stage costume is not just for a character in a scene in a play, but for that character, in that scene, in that play.' Finding out who that character is becomes a journey through the pages of the script, dissecting the environment, what the character says, what the character says about himself, and how other characters speak and act around him. This thesis highlights how I have traveled this journey to create genuine characters through the University of South Carolina's productions of 'The Arabian Nights', 'Our Country's Good,' and 'The Comedy of Errors,' and my internship on the feature film 'The Hunger Games.' It is also a testament of the journey that I have taken as a costume designer and the struggle to discover my own approach.
