Abstract
Korea quickly adopted western music when the first American missionaries arrived in the late 1800s. However, the country's broad and somewhat indiscriminate adoption of new cultural and societal norms threatens the survival of indigenous Korean practices - especially those found in music. In the mid-twentieth century, Korean scholars began a movement to both revive these traditions and keep the public aware of their vanishing heritage.
