Abstract
This article describes a teaching approach that places more value on a student's understanding and comprehension of reading materials rather than focusing on grammatical and spelling errors. The article presents a writing sample from one student. Although the sample contains multiple spelling errors, it shows that the student has a good grasp of the concepts developed in her reading. Generous reading is the act of uncritically reading student texts to determine if English-language learning students understand what they have read and what they have written.
