Abstract

Music can have an impact on an athlete’s performance while participating in their respected sport. In this study the different genres of country, pop, rap, and rock were selected to see which genre had the greatest impact on an athlete’s endurance and performance, while also seeing which one impacted the athlete the least.

For this 5-week study, 40 college athletes were selected and required to listen only to the specified music genre each week during daily strength and conditioning training. The participants listened to no music while training during week 5. Participants rated their overall endurance and performance after each session using a scale provided. Duration of session and calories burned were also reported.

Data and feedback from this study show that pop and rap impacted the athletes' endurance and performance the most while rock and country impacted it the least. The athletes did perform better, however, listening to rock and country, than in the absence of music. While the faster pace of pop and rap music may have contributed to better athletic performance, it is significant to note that all athletes performed better with music than with none at all. Our study highlights how music can play an important role in connecting the mind and body.
